Gibraltar Government plans 1500 flats

895 flats already allocated
Watergardens, Gibraltar
GIBRALTAR  -- With all flats at Mons Calpe Mews and Beach View Terraces now allocated, the government has said it is planning two further housing projects; the first opposite Watergardens and the second on the Eastside reclamation. In late 2011, the GSLP-Liberals promised the electorate they would provide hundreds of new homes at affordable prices if elected. Construction for their first two housing schemes is well underway and a total of 895 flats have already been allocated, including 477 three bedroom flats and 312 two bedroom flats. The housing waiting list guided allocation, with priority given to those on the list at the time of the last general election.

Those who missed out on Mons Calpe Mews and Beach View Terraces will be excited to hear the Government’s ideas for its next two housing projects. The land just north of Varyl Begg Estate, opposite Watergardens, could soon be home to 500 new flats. A number of government entities – including HM Customs – would need to be relocated to allow for these.

In a statement, the Government says the second proposal that will ‘in due course’ be submitted to the Development and Planning Commission, for advice and guidance only, will be a scheme for 1000 flats on the Eastside reclamation.

Mistakes of the past
The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo says his Government is keen to avoid “the mistakes of the past” by continuing to prioritise the construction of affordable homes, so that “everyone eligible who wants one of these flats is able to obtain one”.
