PA: San Roque has the highest Council taxes but gets no services

SAN ROQUE -- On studying the Report on Local Taxes issued annually by the Confederation of Cádiz Businesses (CEC, Confederación de Empresarios de Cádiz), the Partido Andalucista (PA) says it once more reveals the deficiencies in the government of Mayor Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix regarding one the heaviest taxes paid by the town's citizens: the IBI (Impuesto de Bienes Inmuebles), or Council Tax. San Roque pays the second highest taxes in the province. "Not only do we pay more, but there are sections with high taxes that get no or very few municipal services," says a spokesperson. The answer from the town hall is that the luxury of Sotogrande and Alcaidesa makes them demand the second highest taxes in Cádiz.

CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR -- Thirty separate forest fires burned 394.21 hectares of brushland in the Campo area last summer. There was at least one incident in six of the seven municipalities, the exception being La Línea. This is according to a recent report by INFOCA, the province's fire prevention unity. The province itself was impacted by a total of 69 fires, just over 6% of Andalucía's total. In terms of the whole province, most of the man-provoked fires happened in the Campo area, particularly in San Roque, where the annual arson count continues unabated. There was also an arson attack in the Rio de la Miel section of Algeciras and the perpetrator was arrested shortly after. In fact, arson is believed to be one of the main reasons the Campo de Gibraltar has neared the top of the list for annual forest fire incidents.

New store for British products opens in Pueblo Nuevo

PUEBLO NUEVO (San Roque, Cádiz) -- British expats will be delighted to know (if they don't already) that the much-awaited Overseas shop opened its doors to the public last week. Behind the official name, is a Spanish chain that has 15 establishments throughout the country. Overseas, is a franchise belonging to a locally resident British couple that will be employing some 15 people. The opening ceremony last week was presided by the Mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, and the Councillor for the Guadiaro Valley, Juan Roca. Located on Avenida Sierra Bermeja, the main street in Pueblo Nuevo, it is aimed at catering to the 10,000 foreigners living in the area. The shop will be offering products from the Iceland and Waitrose stores available in Britain. We are told that they are looking for a large storage facility in the area.
